Amex rewards rubbish limit

Was given an AMEX plus card where I have to spend £3k in 3 months to get the 25k Avios points.....

I have a big purchase coming up of between 10k-15k for flights which we have the cash in the bank but wanted AVIOS points from it, problem is I’ve been given a starter rate of 1500 which is crap, called them to no avail.

Could I in theory accidentally overpay my credit card by 10,000 and then use the £11,500 and still get all the rewards?

  • They'll almost certainly return it and close your account.
  • I think you’ll need to check your files.

Also they will likely close the account

Buy £1500 worth of flights, then pay £1500 into the account to reduce the outsatnding balance to zero, repeat and bingo, there's your £3000 spent.
  • 1) Consider an Amex chargecard where there is no official limit. That said, they won't let you spend as much as you like - there is a limit behind the scenes, especially until you've held the card for a while.

    2) Find a friendly and trusting travel agency* that will charge to the card in installments. Perhaps even weekly - so you can recycle your limit.

(* the margins on flight ticket sales are relatively small, so most wouldn't take the risk. But your spend is considerable, so they might find a way.)

A credit card with £195 yearly fee and £1500 limit sounds a little odd to me. Perhaps you would be better off just closing the account?
  • have you actually spoken to amex about your problems they sometimes more accommodating than other banks. talk to them explain what you need, see if they can help.
  • I assume you're new to Amex, and are referring to the BA Premium Plus card? They're pretty cautious with new applicants, but generous once you gain their trust.

Don't do anything dodgy with Amex that might cause them to close your account and 'blacklist' you - they do have an internal blacklist, and it'll prevent you from getting a card from them ever again, anywhere in the world.

In your situation, charge card (Amex Gold or Platinum) sounds like the best option, but if you've already got the BAPP, you might as well hit the £3k target for the bonus Avios.
  • The only charge card they do is the Green and Platinum now. The Gold was change to a credit card a few months ago.

    I don't think so: https://m.americanexpress.com/uk/content/gold-card-lounge/

  • The Gold Charge card was removed from the market for new customers a few months ago and replaced with the Gold Credit card.

That link is an old one that is no longer referenced anywhere on the site. Clicking apply just errors out.
