How old should ‘new’ tyres be?

I’m ordering 4 Michelin cross climate tyres and I asked the guy on the phone to make sure they were brand new. I bought winter tyres before and they turned out to be old so I don’t want to get ripped off again. He said that it’s quite normal for new tyres to be a year old because they are often in storage. Is that true?

Michelin don’t sell direct so I can’t order from them. I’m worried because I know tyres deteriorate in storage and these are not cheap.

A year in storage won't do much (if anything) to deteriorate a decent tyre.

Generally it's exposure to a combination of UV, cleaning chemicals and salt that can cause damage over time so not anything that they will be subject to whilst in a warehouse.

How many miles a year do you do? For most people tread wear will make a tyre need replacing rather than age/ deterioration.

I normally do about 4000 or 5000 but much less this year.

The tyres I have now are from when I bought the car in 2014. They have cracks all over them and some of them look quite deep. I do clean them a lot and use tyre shine etc. Maybe that hasn’t helped!

Yeah the tyre shine and especially alloy wheel cleaner won't help as you'll be stripping the oils out of the rubber.
