House purchase, changing suppliers

Apologies I am being thick.

I am hopefully moving into a new home next month. I am currently staying at friends, so I dont have an energy supplier to move with.

The current owners are with NPower, am I correct that I simply take over the NPower contract and then switch?

How long do I have to wait, can I switch immediately or do I have to wait for all the documentation from NPower first?

thanks

As soon as you move in you are on a legally binding 'deemed contract' with NPower. You don't 'take over' the contract, it is a new contract in your name.

You ring NPower with your meter readings and give them your details. As soon as you have confirmation from them - normally in an hour or so if you use email - you can contact your chosen supplier and instigate switching.

NPower, like all other companies, will place you on their most expensive tariff.

It will take a couple of weeks or so to switch and all your contact will be with your new(gaining) company; except for a final bill from NPower
