Strangely enough my Mum can't claim benefits even though she has no income.
Being in a partnership with another person (my Dad) dand it doesn't matter if they are married or not because it is irrelevant, they share his income.0 -
The OP's complaint is that while the benefits received by the household (together with his partner's pension) cover the bills, his only spending money is his Guardian's Allowance of £17.20 a week?

You keep saying 'is my partner expected to support me' well no, she is not, if she is only getting a £400 pension a month, but clearly there is more tot his.
What are you and your partner claiming?
I claim as stated above tax credits, child benefit & guardians allowance, my partner claims nothing & its not a joint claim as such, its all in my name, her income is as stated & we get nothing else from anywhere, no other benefits at all & no other income
There isn't any more to it than that & I don't understand why the situation is as it is !0 -
As you are a couple should you be making a joint claim?
Have you tried a Benefits Calculator as recommended above?0 -
I was somewhat sympathetic to your position until this, you're quite content to play the system to suit your agenda while complaining about its application within the wider context of your situation.
Are you being entirely honest about household income?
Yes entirely honest & I am not trying to play the system I'd much rather not be part of the system at all but as I am without much choice in the matter I want to ensure I am getting everything I am entitled to & at the moment think that may not be the case hence the appeal for help rather than sarcastic comments0 -

We have been down the route of making a joint claim, my partner has a small income as mentioned above & that seems to create more problems than it solves I'm not entirely sure why
The benefit calculator is a good tool in a normal unemployment situation & I have used one in the past but it does not cover our situation in full, as I said I own nothing & everything my partner owns was hers long before we met0 -
It's not up to DWP staff to tell you how to live your life. They can't know every detail of how claimants live and many claimants would rightly be offended if they did try to interfere.
I agree with you 100% there but I did expect them to tell me that I would no longer be entitled to esa because apart from the consequences for myself it does make me wonder how much more money that have handed out with little or no chance of recovering
As I said previously I wouldn't have accepted the loan if I knew I wasn't going to be able to pay it back within a reasonable timescale, old fashioned maybe but I have never been in debt before & certainly didn't intend to be in this position now
To my mind if that were a private loan company they would be bound by the responsible lending act but it appears that it does not apply to government agencies0 -
So what is the total monthly income coming into the household, including the tax credits and child benefit? Does your partner have any savings?
No council tax benefit? Have either of you tried to claim PIP or are you now over pension age?All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
So Child Benefit is about £20 a week, CTC about ??? a week, and Guardian's Allowance £17 a week, plus your partner's pension - is this the total income? How much does that translate into per week or month? Do you receive any help with council tax? I assume no housing benefit as the house is owned and not rented.
If your partner cannot work either, because of ill health or disability, can she claim ESA, or does her pension prevent her from this?
It's hard for people to help you if you drip feed information. However, couples are expected to support each other financially.0 -
If you are living with your partner any claim for tax credits should be a joint claim https://www.gov.uk/claim-tax-credits/joint-claimsInformation I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.0
