Have just started using them having opened 2 1 yr accounts. Very easy to deal with and open accounts. Not used call centre yet. So far would recommend them

Glad to hear of your positive experience Malchester. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I have used them. Not impressed that they didn’t tell me when they introduced savings accounts with better rates and shorter notice periods.

I now have to wait 6 months to transfer my money to a better account.

If you open an account, regularly check their web site for new rates.

You have a point - if I had not seen the OP post, I would not necessarily have clocked the 1.75% a/c - hmm maybe we should give feedback to Charter Savings...
  • Just wanted to say how refreshing it is to see an opening poster who was seeking advice taking the time to acknowledge every reply. Very courteous. It makes anyone who takes the time to offer an honest view feel valued and want to do it again. It's what this forum is all about really, sharing experiences (good, bad or indifferent) and trying to help others. Sometimes the forum can be a brutal and nasty place and I am sure that there are some posters who are turned off carrying on by the reaction which can sometimes be received even to posts which are just trying to be helpful. We should all try to follow the example of the OP here.

Thank you very much Hattie. What a lovely thing to say! I don't think it takes that much effort to send a few words of appreciation to the people who have taken the time to respond. Pressing the "thanks" button is better than nothing I guess, but it's a bit of a lazy dehumanized way of extending your thanks to someone. Anyway Hattie - I am going to take your advice and open an account with the Charter Savings Bank. Best wishes to you. Dean
  • Just a heads up:

I have several Charter accounts and no problems, however I recently gave notice for a partial withdrawal, only to find that they don't use faster payments so the funds don't get deposited into your recipient account for two working days (after the date they are withdrawn from your Charter account). This effectively means 2 days loss of interest, or could cause issues if you needed the money for something by a set date. I haven't experienced this with any other provider who all seem to use faster payments.

...on the plus side you can perform an electronic transfer to your nominated account that isn’t constrained by a daily transfer limit. There is no upper limit to the amount you can electronically transfer in one single transaction.

That snippet of info is courtesy of Charter Savings Bank help-desk this morning and appertains to their instant access 1.40% account;...not sure if it applies to any other accounts.

As you say many institutions have a daily electronic transfer limit,...Tesco Bank £10k, ICICI Bank £20k et al, ...however their transfers can be almost instantaneous.

NCBS for example have a daily limit of £25k but similar to Charter Savings Bank their electronic transfers can be a bit laboured. :(

The fastest payers are ‘clearing banks’,...the slow payers aren’t;(something like that anyway!)

Every bank uses faster payments. Its the only fee free way to meet the requirements of the Payment Services Regulations. Withdrawals will reach your nominated account next working day. Withdrawal requests after 3pm are treated as being made on the next working day, so you don't lose 2 days of interest. Most building societies and savings banks will follow this model as they don't have direct access to the faster payments system.

So if your fixed term bond matured on Saturday and you had given them prior notice you wanted to go to be transferred to your current account when should it reach it?

    Thank you.
