Electoral roll mess

Hello everyone, I didn't know where to post this, but I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice or at least, put my mind at ease.

I've recently signed up to get my credit reports from the 3 major CRAs, and to my shock none of my electoral rolls match up. I don't really understand how this has happened and don't know what to do next.

My first details are from 2015-2016 when I lived with my now ex boyfriend, my name is incorrect. I don't know how to explain this, but I'll give it a go... So for social media I use my mums surname 'Smith-Doe' in an attempt to help stop people finding me because of my profession, but my actual name is Jane Doe- That's what is on my passport, driving license etc. My ex registered us to vote for the 2015 election and I guess used my social media name, and I must have stupidly over-looked it when the voting cards arrived.

I moved, re-registered to that address which was 'Flat 1 Blank Street'. On Experian, it doesn't seem to have the flat number. On Clearscore/Equifax It seems to have 'Flat 3 Blank Street'
- Both of these addresses have my actual name of Jane Doe. But on Noddle/Call Credit it only has my current address (I moved last year but forgot to update my register until April this year). However, it has my name as Jane Smith-Doe. Where as Experian and Equifax have my current address with Jane Doe.

I hope this is understandable. It all seems a bit of a mess to me and I don't really know what to do. I phoned my local council yesterday and was told to email them with the details. Unfortunately I no longer have any documents for my previous addresses, except probably bank statements which I could get off the internet. I have my passport and driving license. A couple of weeks ago I received the annual electrical register forms, and on there my name was Jane Doe.

I'm just worried incase I have more than one credit account? Or if this is illegal. And I'm also worried about how this could affect me in the future in terms of applying for a mortgage etc.

Thank you for your time.

  • It doesn't seem like a particular issue.

You might just want to raise a query with thh CRAs to ensure your aliases are also listed, so that you're more easily matched. Also see if they can correct the minor difference in your addresses at the same time, but again, not usually a huge problem.
  • It doesn't sound like a huge issue to me, but you should make sure that you are registered to vote only at your current address using your full legal name (the one that is on official documents such as passport, driving licence, bank statements, etc). Contact the council (as you intend to do) to ensure the info they have is up to date, and then ask them to pass that along to the CRAs to update their records. It might help to let the CRAs know about your aliaes and errors in your address history (as zx81 has suggested) to avoid any duplication of your credit reports, and so there are no issues with credit applications down the line.
  • Perfect, thank you. I will contact them later today. I e-mailed Noddle last night regarding the mix up of names, and questioned whether they need to add it to aliases. No response as of yet but to get anything altered on the electoral roll I believe all 3 CRAs require proof from my local council. I'm hoping it's just as easy as I'm making it sound!

    Thank you again.
  • The thought has suddenly hit me that none of the CRAs have a record of me at my childhood address, despite voting in 2 general elections whilst living there. I would have been on the electoral register from 2005-2012

I'll send an email to the council when I finish work later today, but I don't suppose anyone has any idea why this could be? Another question is would potential mortgage lenders look at this or not? Considering it's longer than the 3 years of previous addresses they typically ask for.

    Thanks again.
  • Your credit files show your last 6 years of history.
  • Hi, just wanted to say that when you contact Noddle, it is in fact the parent company you want to contact (TransUnion ex CallCredit). (For Clearscore you need to contact Equifax direct as they too are the parent company).

Your parents address should be listed with the CRAs electoral register information, as previously you had lived there and voted from there. Again, you need to get that updated correctly with the CRAs direct.

They show back to 2001 for me. (But only for electoral register previous addresses).

  • Okay, so I think i've jumped the gun a bit and made a huge mistake. I phoned my local council today and he said that they don't hold any information about previous addresses and he doesn't know how it is possible to get this information. Is this right? I've disputed/raised a query with Experian but I'm worried they do have the correct information regarding my previous name 'Smith-Doe' as it was mistakenly signed up for like that and now it's going to be some sort of black mark against me for raising the issue if it checks out correct their end? Noddle/TransUnion information is wrong on their part after I spoke to the guy on the phone and he confirmed to me what my registered details are. However, they are asking me to send proof and I'm not sure if the council will be willing to send that information?

In hindsight I should have e-mailed the council first and now I'm worried how this looks on my report.

I think you're probably over thinking this.

The council probably won't hold old information on you. They are likely to effectively have a list with your name and current address on it. The CRAs can access this information at any time, and I think they will then keep the historic record (rather than your council).

If I were you, I would check with the council what address they currently have for you on the electoral roll. I assume this will be your current one as this is where you are receiving your voting cards. I'd also check that they don't have you listed multiple times.

Then go the CRAs that have the wrong address and tell them it's the wrong address. This is incorrect information and not where you are on the electoral roll so they shouldn't need anything to correct this.

The other name shouldn't be an issue. You are entitled to use whatever name you like to identify yourself. It won't be any different to you having a maiden and married name.
  • Okay, thank you. In which case, my current address is correct but the name is wrong. Just to confirm do you know if the raised disputes will have any issue for me applying for credit/mortgage in the future?
