Good Wet Food for Cats?

As our cat gets older, 10 years now, we have been advised to slowly move him over to wet food. This is try and get more water/liquid into his diet alongside increasing his water intake. With the bewildering amount of options across the supermarkets, can anyone recommend some products that their cats love?

I know they all have different tastes, but just looking for some experiences from other cat owners.

Do you use 1 pouch a day, put half out, stick it in the fridge??

Our cat's usual wet food is HiLife Tempt Me, once a week we give him a tin of Applaws instead (more expensive but by the way he guzzles it down it's probably tastier). In the past we've tried him with Whiskas, he always ate the oh so meaty (the most expensive!), would pick at the Whiskas in Jelly but wouldn't touch the Whiskas in gravy.

As for how much, it depends how active your cat is. Ours is a 14 year old house cat, about average sized for a male cat, we give him one pouch of Hi Life in the evening with 5 grams of dry food and in the morning he just has 20 grams of dry food. We used to give him half a pouch each for breakfast and tea, no need to keep it in the fridge if you do this, just fold the top of the open pack over and clamp it with a bulldog clip.

We give our cat any wet food, whichever is lowest price at the Supermarket. She will eat any of it as long as it doesn't have fish in it. She's fed about 6 times a day, half a pouch at a time with a bowl of dried food always available to supplement.

She also likes Prawns and unsmoked cooked cod- no other fish at all she has turned her nose up at nearly all freshly cooked meat apart from chicken too.

On the other hand my mothers cats will not eat supermarket own brand wet food but eat Whiskas only, despite her trying every brand. They clear the dried food too.

  • Supermarkets don't have a very good range and most are very low in meat, and meat is what cats need. They also tend to be pricier than better foods as you are paying for filler. The more meat a cat eats, the less it actually needs to eat.

There are various guides around for how much a cat needs to eat depending on their weight.

Zooplus does a really good range with lots of variety of high meat content wet foods, MAC's, Bozita, Animonda Carny are all very well priced wet foods as a start

We feed half-and-half wet and dry (in separate bowls). As a house cat, she only needs one sachet of wet a day, but a more active cat may need 2.

If you split one sachet between a.m. and p.m. don't put it in the 'fridge - cats don't like chilled food. We seal ours with a 'klip it' clip.

My cat swears by Purina Perle fish sachets in gravy. Although he is a house cat he is a big boy and has two sachets a day. On the recommendation of a vet I add water to them to ensure he gets enough. I leave senior biscuits down. He also lurves Dreamies! !

My cat gets a pouch in the morning, a pouch in the evening and a smaller, 50g pouch with her arthritis supplement in for supper. She also has some biscuits to graze on but she's not keen on dry food so doesn't eat much of it.

I try to keep a variety of wet food in the cupboards as she can easily go off food she used to enjoy if she has it too often. There's not a great selection in my local supermarkets so I tend to buy Sheba or Gourmet and stock up on better quality food when I see it.

Sainsbury's is often decent if you have one nearby. They do these Naturo mousse pots and Lily's Kitchen trays which are grain free. They also stock Encore, which isn't a complete food (so you can't feed them it all the time) but makes a nice treat.
