    Just a curious question...

there is a natural home remedy for the skin thats been doing the rounds for hundreds of years and just involves 1 specific vegetable whereby the juice is drained and massaged onto the skin. Because the vegetable is a bit of a pain to cut/squeeze & drain most people can never be bothered to continue using it/ or even bother starting in the first place. The same applied for me when I wanted to use this remedy long term. I gave up after a short while as I just couldn't be hassled going through the whole process of putting it into a mixer and then draining. When looking for anything similar that was bottled online there are only a couple of sellers in America but it's not even the right variation of the vegetable that gives the best results.

This wouldn't be sold to be ingested/eaten, it's simply to massage onto skin so wondered what the lagalities were when it comes to rebranding something that is normally for consumption to be bottled for use as a natural remedy. There are no added ingredients/addiditives used. My concerns were the small printed details on bottle ie an expirary date, place of origin of the vegtable etc?

Consult with the manufacturer of the product you wish to rebrand; a manufacturer who you will need the prior permission and consent of to do so.

I'm sure, together with the their permission and consent, they will provide you with all the details you now enquire of.

The difficulty you may have is that if the manufacturer only retails currently in the US, they may not be currently so concerned with the legalities of the EU/UK. But I feel sure if you are to become their distributor (albeit under a different branding) this side of the pond, they will take a very big interest, or at least point you in the right direction.

I'm sorry, but this forum does not permit us to provide legal advice.
  • Hi,

thanks for the above reply, however I think you may have mis-understood. I'm not looking to import the American brand so as to re-package it for re-sale. I want to simply take the said vegetable, cut and drain it then bottle it for use as the herbal treatment which it's commonly been used for. It's very simple in so much as it's just a vegetable but not being used to consume. I would have thought this to be very straight forward as it's not far different from a farmer simply selling his own vegetables on his land. You can do what you want with your fruit/veg but I'm importing a vegetable and using it for an alternative purpose so wasn't sure if this could be done?
  • Several issues:

    - importing the vegetable. You may need permission from Ministry of Agriculture (or whatever it's called now)
    https://www.gov.uk/guidance/import-and-export-plants-and-fresh-produce
    - preparing the product to be safe, taking into account bacteria contamination (eg botulism)
    - if the product is classed as a medicine or a traditional herbal medicine, registering with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency
    https://www.gov.uk/guidance/decide-if-your-product-is-a-medicine-or-a-medical-device
    - advertising the product and substantiating any claims made in advertising

You will also need comprehensive product liability insurance, which will probably require some form of formal quality assurance management systems in your manufacturing. In many cases you will find it easier to contract the manufacturing out to a food or pharmaceutical processor.
