Help! No credit history and no one can find me!

Hi,

I’m posting this for a friend and advice would be greatly appreciated!

My friend has never had any form of credit, no phone contracts, credit cards, insurance etc. She’s 26 and had the same bank account since she was 15.

Last week she applied for credit for the first time with Apple and was turned down. I told her to register with Equifax or Experian to check her credit score. She’s tried to register with both but both said they couldn’t find anything on her or verify her.

She is on the electrol role, is the reason they can’t find her because she has never had any credit or could her details be wrong somehow?

Does she now apply for a credit building credit card with high interest just to build up her credit or is there anything else she can do to help her score?

    1. She has no score, no 1 has a credit score, well we all do but lenders don't see it, lenders see the history.

    2. Tell her to register with Call Credit or Noodle (who uses Call credit data so its the same).

    3. Who is it she banks with ?
What kind of account does she have ?
Maybe the bank doesn't report to Equifax or Experian.

She has a credit history as she has a bank account, just a thin 1.
  • Always ignore the score.

Yes apply for a credit card and use for usual daily purposes the pay off in full each month after receiving the statement.

Get a sim only contract mobile as well if possible
  • Not every lender reports to every credit agency, which would explain why you can't find her. Being on the electoral role will help, the issue will simply be a lack of having previously held credit before.

I would definitely recommend trying to access information from all three CRAs. Request a statutory report - they are obliged to provide this information. They will ask for ID if they are unable to identify your friend. Once this is done, they should be able to provide access to the credit reports.
