I joined them last week as I discovered I wasn't as fully covered with my dealership's AA cover as I hoped to be.
I had a slight accident 84 miles away from home whilst visiting a friend. I turned down a wrong junction on a dual carriageway in the dark and curbed it at high speed. I knew it was going to be a suspension repair and managed to get it back to my friend's house but I wasn't taking it on the motorway home.
I phoned the RAC where straight away I was told as it was an accident, there would be a £140 callout fee, and then a £1.68 per mile surcharge. I worked this out to be just over £300 and agreed to be recovered as I needed the car to be home so I could arrange repairs without going through my insurance and losing my no claims.
Received a letter yesterday from the RAC what I suspected to be an invoice, when instead it was asking for my insurance details to claim the recovery back. I saw the email address on the bottom of the letter and sent them an email asking if I could pay for the recovery from my own pocket as I don't want to lose my no claims discount next year.
Received a phone call this morning "We usually do recover from insurance but as you want to pay for it yourself, as a good will gesture you don't have to pay us anything."
I was shocked! In this day and age, nobody really lets you have anything for free especially to the value of £300. I think that's great customer service and finally showed some good luck! I definitely know who I'm renewing my breakdown cover with next year :j
