New Car - 1.6 GDI or 1.6 TGDI (Tucson)
Hello,
Looking for some advice and I will add that I am going to pop into my local Hyundai when I can and I may not need a big car but it's personal preference -
I test drove the Hyundai Tucson last week as I have been swaying towards this for a while. There are obviously several trims and I am looking at the Premium and Premium SE specifically as below -
Hyundai Tucson 1.6 GDI Premium (Petrol) - 39.8 MPG
Hyundai Tucson 1.6 TGDI Premium SE (Petrol) - 37.7 MPG
I don't need a diesel for the journeys that I will be doing - an average day I will be doing no more than 20 miles back and forth to work, long journeys will only be on weekends or holidays etc when motorway driving is needed.
Now, I am struggling to understand the differences between GDI and TGDI? I assume TGDI is faster etc however I thought it would produce a better MPG. Yes, the MPG is average but a lot lower than what is stated would be worrying.
I am aware this is a bigger car and might not produce a great MPG as hatchbacks would but what would be too low? What is a good average for this size of car?
Any help would appreciated as I'm not that clued up about this and would be even better if there was some Tucson owners on here!
Thank you

Not sure how you come to that conclusion. To be faster it needs to produce more power and the only way to produce more power is to use more fuel. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
No conclusion, just an assumption as stated. Thank you though - will see if someone can explain the difference.0

Pretty easy to explain really...
1.6 GDI = 130 hp
1.6 TGDI = 175 hp
You don't get anything for free!Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
The T-GDI has a turbo.
I suspect the non-turbo would feel quite sluggish, but I've not driven it to know.
Check the insurance groups between the two, too.
Personally I'd have the Premium SE for the bigger wheels LED Headlights and the sunroof, if the extra cost was not prohibitive.0 -
Thank you Paradigm and Lorian!
Exactly the reason I was looking at the Premium SE, for all of the extras! Insurance doesn't have a big difference at all it's just the MPG that is putting me off - 37.7 is low in itself at stated by Hyyndai but I suspect the real MPG will be 30 or under! I am used to around high 40's or pushing 50.
Very surprising!! Hopefully there is an owner on here that can help me out. Thank you again.0 -
Have you tried the Hyundai forums?0
