HSBC Card declined at cashpoint

Friday Afternoon I went to make a cash withdrawal and my transaction was declined saying please speak to branch. Knowing I had just been paid the day before I went to use another cash machine at a petrol station that charges ..... and I got out the cash I wanted.
Iam concerned because I have an overdraft and the bank have closed my account without telling me but surely I would have recieved a letter and not been able to access cash in another machine.
Anyone else have any problems getting money out yesterday afternoon?

Clydesdale Bank cards would do this when the Maestro network went down. Don't know why it worked in the chargeable machine for you, but my card brought up that "contact branch" message which I did only to find that the network was down
This was quite a while ago but I assume that's what happened yesterday.0
