Canon EOS 400d Buying Help

OK, so the Canon EOS 400d is a great camera, and it has £50 cashback now on. http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/prod191.html has it available for £350 for just the body kit, or for anouther £60 with thier EF-S 18-55mm lens kit.
I understand that this lens is not particularly highly rated. I am not a very advanced user (never used a DSLR) and the camera is for everyday use. Holidays, people, places, day, night, close up and far away...but does not have to be speciliast in any one area. Am i better off buying the body, and then buying a lens seperatley? Is there a good all purpose lens for not much more than the £60 difference, rather than the Canon-supplied lens kit? Even better if i can get the lens from Jessops, i have a £50 voucher from my birthday to use!
My budget isnt very big, but then,my requirements are particularly high either. What do people think? Thanks!!

The kit lens is fine for what you need. To get an all round multi-purpose lens you would have to spend a few hundred.
I have had the 400d for over a year, it to was my first dslr. The first lens I bought was the 50mm f1.8. Its a fixed prime lens and is very good for the price (about £60).
I have also bought this...

Its not big and its not clever.0 -
I'm to thinking of getting a 400d and have been looking around and so far come up with this as the best deal I can find.

I've also seen this camera with lens in a local shop for £369.99 (after cash back) complete with a canon carry bag which is also tempting me.0 -
From the official Canon shop on ebay you can get a refurb one for £300-ish with the kit lens.
Canon Outlet
Unfortunately they seem to be out of 400ds at the moment. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
The kit lens is fine for starters, when you get more into photography you'll find it limits what the camera can do, the body of the 350 and 400 can resolve better than the lens allows. You'll be unlikely to pickup a decent lens for the £60 mark.
Sigma make some good budget lenses, but for a good mid-range, similar focal length zoom you'll be looking at several hundred pounds. The best fixed lens for £60 would be the 50mm f/1.8 II Canon, but this isn't a zoom, but fixed focal length at 50mm, however on a 350 or 400d it would equate to a fixed 80mm lens, which would be quite limiting as a day-to-day lens.
In your situation I'd probably go for the 350d as it's at a bargain price now, body only and get a decent lens.
