Any Word 2016 experts who can help?

Options
This is a followup to an earlier post. I have some existing Word documents, created using the Normal template, which I wish to convert to a different template, which I have created and stored in the Custom template folder. I am using Word 2016.

In Word 2016 for Dummies it says if you wish to change a document's template you need to navigate to the Word Add-Ins option. Then choose Templates from the Manage drop down list (at bottom of dialog box) and click the Go button and the Templates and Add-Ins dialog box appears. You should see which Template is currently attached to the document e.g. Normal.

Click the Attach button to open the Template Attachment dialog. Select the template you want to attach to your document and press Open button to attach the Template to your document and close the dialogue window. This is where I get stuck. THERE IS NO "OPEN" button on this screen. There is an OK button but this does not attach the template I selected.

Can anyone who is familiar with Word 2016 have a look at this screen and seen if they have the Open button available.

There is an Open button once you have clicked on Attach and selected the template. Then once you have a template in the box, click OK. I have tried it by adding templates (some I made myself) to both/either of the upper and lower places to put templates but clicking OK seems to do nothing, even when I ticked the box Automatically Update document styles. It's a mystery!
  • When you hit "attach" it opens a file explorer window to select a new template, the OPEN button is on the file explorer dialog, not the template options.
(Although I could be wrong, I often am.)

You will probably find that once you have attached a different template to a Word document, nothing appears to happen - the document will look exactly the same (at least that was the case in older versions, and I doubt it has changed).

What happens in the background is that macros, autotext, toolbar/UI customisations, and keyboard shortcuts stored in the new template will be made available to the document. If you ticked the Automatically Update Styles box, styles from the new template will also be made available.

If you want to use any of these things from the new template you have to explicitly do so e.g. go through and apply the new styles.

If the new template contains content of any kind or a different page layout, you won't see that. The easier way to manage that scenario would be to create a new document based on the template, and copy your content in from the existing document.
