Pension at my age ?

Just looking for a little bit of advice.

I was made redundant (voluntary) last year and decide at the age of 53 I would just do some part time work. I have 2 pensions from my previous employer.

I have however been given a job by a friend and wonder if it's worth joining the company pension scheme. I only plan on doing this job maybe 4 or 5 years.

Advice greatly appreciated.

I need to pay 4% this year and 5% next. The company do make a contribution as well. Just wasn't sure if it was worth it for a couple of years.

Why give up an employer's contribution?

Do you already have enough pension saved / accrued to allow you retire in the manner you wish to retire in???

  • Free money. Always worth it regardless how short a time you’ll be contributing

Nearly but the part time job I planned was going to help. A full time for a few years will help more.

I'm always puzzled by the number of people who think joining a pension scheme 'isn't worth it' if they only plan to be with their employer for short time and/or work less than full time.

Think of it this way: if you have 35 different jobs, each lasting only a year or so, and reject scheme membership every time because you won't be there very long, what will you live on when retire...?

It is ALWAYS good to join the pension. Free money and tax relief make it so.

Even more betterer ;) if they pay you via salary sacrifice.

  • I have taken my two FS pensions (so I can work 3 day week until SP kicks in) but have made sure I'm paying into the works Stakeholder pension and I will only do it for three years, I look at it as another lump sum that is gaining far better than I could get elsewhere, especially with the company paying in 9%.
