Should you let the selling agent talk to your mortgage broker? This seems strange, as the broker should not be the one saying what you are comfortable paying.

I prefer to talk to the selling agent personally.
My reasons for that is estate agents can be quite pushy when it comes to buyers, especially first time buyers. They can apply a lot of undue pressure with unreasonable demands.
If they speak to me (as in a broker) they are less likely to make subtle threats about the vendor pulling out because the valuation has not been instructed in 23.2 seconds. It makes the whole process a lot more relaxed in the main.
But I leave that to my customer (the buyer) to decide.
I do not discuss what you can afford, just that I can get the applicant a Mortgage for the amount required, I do not get involved with the negotiations and I tend to only really take over once a purchase price has been agreed.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. So you wouldn't give your broker parameters to work to in terms of what they can tell the EA?as the broker should not be the one saying what you are comfortable paying.

Our broker and estate agent were based on the same high street.
The broker walked our AIP down to the estate agents to secure our offer
Nothing to do with how much we were paying. We discussed that with the estate agent, but they needed the proof we could actually offer what we had offered! FTB 2017

Similar to the brokers who have already replied, I would be keen for some sort of contact with the broker acting for buyer. Although I would never expect any conversation to relate to affordability. No reputable broker would ever have such a conversation with an EA.
Typically contact with the broker is only made once price terms have been agreed, and the focus is on initial approval, valuation arrangements, underwriting etc.0 -
