My daughter is moving to a flat which has no cable in the area. She needs internet as she is in the middle of an open university course. She does not need a home phone. the flat does have a BT line but it seems a shame to have to pay out extra money for a phopne line, just to use it for internet. Any suggestions??
Keep on trucking!

The only alternative to having a phone line, would be to use mobile data e.g. here. This may be OK depending on the bandwidth required. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
3 (Mobile company) are now doing mobile internet for £10 a month - I have heard this on an advert so don't know the details but I would GUESS that yyou probably need a contract with them (although some good value ones now, espesh. for students.) and that the speed/data limit wouldn't be very good.I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right0

She will have to bite the bullet and get the phone re-connected. Using a mobile for long periods is going to cost an arm+a leg.
Another thought, are there any neighbours with BB ? Perhaps she could come to some amicable agreement to use their setup. If she contributed a wireless modem/router they could be interested ?????? Worth a shot.0 -

The three 3G solution doesn't look bad provided she is a light user and in a decent coverage area. I know someone who uses 3G regularly for internet. As you'd expect you don't normally get anything like the advertised speeds but it's perfectly fine for general web surfing.
You get 1Gb included for a tenner a month but after that it gets really expensive. If she is a YouTube addict, forget it. Probably just about acceptable for general web use though.
For moderate to high users ADSL is always going to be cheaper. Check out Martin's article on broadband.
That suggestion of sharing with a neighbour is always worth a try if she is friendly with anyone else in the same block who is near enough to get the signal. Plenty of people around doing this.

i have the 3 internet connection and haven't noticed it being particularly slow or difficult. i just surf, email etc. the limit is 3gb for a month for £15 i am not up to a month yet but the device comes with a monitor indicates that i seem to be no where near the limit, they say it equals 100 hours surfing. you do need to sign up for a 2 year (or 18month if you already have a 3 phone) account for me much cheaper than having to get BT phone line.Ready to Go Go!0
