E.ON WARNING
Has this happened to anyone else?
I took an E.ON 1 Year Fixed Tariff V 13 through MSE Energy Club last October which should have run until 3rd October 2018.
On 16th August 2018 E.ON sent an email titled ‘YOUR E.ON TARIFF ENDS 3RD OCTOBER’, it read - Thanks for being with us. Your tariff is ending soon and we would love you to stay with us. We’ve looked at our cheapest available tariff for you, and you could save £217.68 if you choose EON Go Online 1 YEAR V 16 instead of our standard variable tariff.
Please note you can only sign up to E.ON through price comparison websites.
You can renew anytime from now onwards. If we don’t hear from you before 3rd October 2018, you’ll go onto our standard variable price tariff – E.ON Energy Plan – and you may miss out on savings. Take a look at the rest of this email for more information, and if you have any questions, just get in touch. Yours sincerely The E.ON Customer Service Team
The rest of the email gave the vital unit rates ie Electric: AM, PM, Gas charges + Standing Charges for both. I compared with other companies on MSE Energy Club & there was the E.ON suggested V 16 Tariff, so decided to accept despite there being no discounts for direct debit, dual fuel or paperless bills.
Sunday 19th August 2018, I signed up as stated through MSE Energy Club.
Monday 27th August E.ON emails stated they had started the more expensive V 16 tariff immediately ie 19th August! There was nothing I could see in the original E.ON offer stating that they would terminated my current V 13 immediately 6 weeks (46 days) before the 1 Year Fix had ended. No sane person would want to start paying the increased rates that far in advance, there would be no financial saving.
Immediately I contacted E.ON, who said I had to contact MSE Energy Club, they said they had no control when a switch takes place. Back to E.ON twice by telephone as the Bank Holiday delayed both companies responses and the 2 week window to leave penalty free was only days away, it has now passed. I cannot be put back on V 13 because it is not available to ‘new’ customers on their computers so am still waiting for a reply.
I cannot see what I did wrong to have been lured into this terrible situation. Any helpful suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hello icicles and sorry for the late reply.

Switches from one of our tariffs to another through a Price Comparison site go through immediately. I'm sorry an advisor told you to contact MSE. This was poor advice as there's nothing MSE can do.

There's no change to the reduction you'll receive for paying with a Monthly Direct Debit. As with our Fixed 1 Year v13 tariff, there are still lower daily standing charges for paying this way. Saves about £45 per fuel per year when compared with other payment methods. You're right about the paperless billing and Dual Fuel discounts - these no longer apply.

Sorry again for the late reply.

I understand why you're annoyed to have lost out on the last few weeks of your fix, but look at it another way. You say "No sane person would want to start paying the increased rates that far in advance" but if you'd waited until the very end you might have found that Go online V16 tariff had been withdrawn and replaced with a more expensive one. That 6 weeks on your old rates may not have saved as much as 12 months on a hypothetical 'v17'

That's the gamble you have to take with fixed tariffs.

In fact, checking now, V16 has indeed been withdrawn, and V17 has come and gone. Go online V18 is a little cheaper for electric lot cheaper on the gas for my region. There's no early termination fee* for switching tariffs early within E.ON so you should do a price comparison ASAP and if it's lower than what you're on now get it switched again.

I'd been planning on leaving, this one might be enough for me to stay.

*Malc, given the 'Go Online' tariff's aren't available from the E.ON website directly, can you confirm there's no charge changing from one E.ON tariff to another via a PCW?

People are getting confused between what constitutes a switch and what, under Licence Conditions, is treated as a 'mutual variation of contract' (SLC 23A - Mutual Variations). If a consumer agrees a new tariff with an existing supplier it is treated as a mutual variation of contract which the supplier is required to implement within 5 days. There is no cooling off period as the consumer is already under contract with the supplier.

Edit: There is a possible 'get out of contract' clause in the SLC which suggests that the supplier should not agree a mutual variation which is to the disadvantage of the customer.

Happy to confirm Raxiel. Exit fees don't apply when going from one E.ON tariff to another regardless of the means of switching including through a Price Comparison site. Hengus gives a great explanation. Thanks Hengus.

    Hope this helps.
