Electricity rates

Sorry if this is a daft question, but I know nothing about electricity/reates/etc...

My meter was checked recently and the comment was made that I am on a white meter heating rate....I checked my bills and it said I was on Economy 7 - are these the same thing?

However, i was on economy 7 when I had storage heaters, but we got GCH fitted in Oct 2005, we moved to Npower in Jul 2006, who have obviously kept us on E7 - am I better off changing from E7, or doesn't it make any difference?

Currently my bills are £42 a month Gas and £15-£20 p/w electric (we have a key meter though, not much point in changing it now as we are moving home.)

What sort of unit rates are considered good?

Economy 7 is supplied on a white meter, or used to be.

If you have gas central heating you will not want to be on Economy 7 as you will pay a higher rate for your electricity during the daytime. The idea being that your old storage heaters will use cheaper electricity in the night time period.

So I would suggest that you move to a normal tariff asap.

    Hi,

If you want to move onto a standard single rate tariff, you can call them for a change. If it's a key meter, they may be able to make the change without a visit.

Just makesure that you don't have anything that will be switched on by the meters timeswitch that would be on all night when you don't want it to be.

If you meter is a 2 tailed meter where it is connected up as peak and off peak to your fusebox, it's E7. If you meter is a 1 tail affair, and you have a seperate day meter then the situation is different and your bills are on a different tariff to your meter set up. (thats would be a peak meter with a seperate off peak meter which can sometimes be the case with white meters)

As far as your house move goes. Hopefully you will have a credit meter, if not get one as they are always cheaper than PP meters. You need to find out your consumption from your bills and have a look at some of the comparison sites on the net for pricing. Just remember that your current bill will be higher per unit since it's PP and your new property may be lower on the basis of not being PP.

    Thanks for the replies:D

I won't be on a pp meter in the new place, I will be going with monthly DD - I wanted that just now but didn't see the point with us moving soon tbh.

I will at least get them to change me to a normal rate for my last while living here.

    Thanks again.
