All of the flat doors in the building were painted?

That sounds more like the building freeholder's managers than your landlord.

Ah, but could the paint odor be noticed with a flatulent young goat about? Even non-flatulent goats are whiffy....

Ignoring opinion about whether you share liability, I'd at least write to the Freeholder of their Agent (maybe even copying the CEO of the decoration Company from CEOmail website)
    - describig the incident (what, when, where; briefly) and
    - stating that they were irresponsibly negligent (no warning, no signs)
    - expected recompense (cleaning bill- with evidence? Replacement garment; purchase price/date less allowance of depreciation / wear & tear?)

You might be surprised - I've got lucky a few times with a constructive complaint

Yes, a goodwill gesture is quite likely, especially if you go in with a constructive attitude - honey instead of vinegar.
  • This happened to me when I was a tenant in a block of flats; the issue being that they painted the closed front door so it was effectively sealed into the frame as the paint dried. The LL complained to the buildings manager; it was shoddy work.
    They are an EYESORES!!!!
  • The lack of signage re wet paint is not great - however if decorators were seen in the building earlier personally I'd be cautious when coming home. Providing feedback of signs may help others in the future but for now try to put a positive spin on it - improvements/maintenance is going on.

    Something is suss here.

It is very hard to paint the outside of an inward-opening door (which this obviously is) while it is closed.
And if the door is then closed before the paint is dry it obviously sticks to the frame where it touches the stop.

    Shoddy work indeed.

My thoughts as well, if they painted the door while it was closed it must have left an unpainted edge around it.

I think the impetus is on everyone to mitigate the problems. They didnt by putting up the warning sign but i think you failed to mitigate at all by not using a door as you should (ie with the handle).

If this has been done to a number of flats you would expect a few of you to have been caught out by this, has anyone else?
