So yes it can be done but it sounds like you need a better builder and it might need next door's agreement. Plus it would cost more.

If this is the case - and lateral stability is not an issue - then a structural engineer might suggest removing the first floor wall as well (replacing it with a lightweight partition) rather than carrying out engineering work on the ground floor to support it.

Get a qualified structural engineer in. This is the most important part of your works so get it done properly. Use the above website. For reference it cost us £300 for an engineer in to take a look and produce the calcs.0
