    Removing the pillars is only possible if the walls they connect to have sufficient lateral stability to not need the support they provide. A structural engineer will advise whether this is the case.

    The OP needs a structural engineer, not a better builder.

    If this is the case - and lateral stability is not an issue - then a structural engineer might suggest removing the first floor wall as well (replacing it with a lightweight partition) rather than carrying out engineering work on the ground floor to support it.

    Sometimes it pays to ask an engineer rather than a builder :D

    Get a qualified structural engineer in. This is the most important part of your works so get it done properly. Use the above website. For reference it cost us £300 for an engineer in to take a look and produce the calcs.
