Gents suit suggestion?

Never needed to wear a suit for about 10 yrs but need to in a couple of weeks for a funeral. When I tried my old ones on they drown me,seem to have lost 2" off both chest and waist. I've done a trawl of charity shops and found nothing. So trying to decide how much to spend and what to buy factoring in my 70 yrs and how many occasions it's gonna be used. Is it best buying a cheap suit or a decent wool one or just making do with feeling silly in my outsize suit?

If you know your size, what about buying a secondhand one off Ebay.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End

never thought suits would be on ebay, i'll have a look thanks
You can get almost anything on Ebay
Make sure you narrow down your search otherwise you'll get too many results to scroll through, rather than just enter "suit" in the search box put "M&S" suit or "Marks and Spencer" suit (or any other brand you choose).Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End

Sorry to hear this. Without knowing your exact situation, I have to say that at about that age, a lot of us end up going to a lot of funerals, so getting something that is comfortable is worthwhile. I'm not sure of your budget, but would suggest:
Look up places that do alterations near you - one of the dry cleaners, or some small businesses. They don't always come cheap, but if the suit you have is a decent one, it may be cheaper than getting another one.
If you are a fairly standard size (any of the clothing company websites will tell you how to measure) then the suggestion above, or look on the major charity clothing websites.
If you really need to try a suit on, you don't have much time for trying & returning, but if you could get to a Matalan, their suits come in under £60. They aren't good quality, but won't have to stand up to much wear & tear. If you can stretch to it, M&S do really nice quality suit 'separates'
At many of the funerals I go to,men turn up in smart trousers and a separate jacket. Would that be possible?
Another suggestion is to go to another town (using your bus pass!). Best bet is a well heeled town, where comfortably off widows donate their husband's lovely suits to the charity shops where their friends help out. Around me, we know exactly the best towns for good charity shop clothes.
I do hope that you can get something that suits you.0 -
Do you actually need a suit for the funeral?
The few I've been to lately, I can't recall anyone wearing a suit.
Do you have dark trousers and s dark jacket? Or maybe try Primark.
It seems not very MSE to buy a suit for a funeral.0 -
No need for a suit, just something smart without being flashy.0

If you are on a tight budget it would be worth checking if there are any Marks & Spencer's outlet stores near you.
They often have end of line clearance items at very low prices - I've seen suit jackets and trousers for around £7 each in the clearance section of my local outlet.0 -
Hi kuepper,
What sort of budget would you be comfortable with? You can get something cheap and cheerful for circa £50 in Matalan. I wouldn't let yourself wear something that you feel 'silly' in, and you can always wear the trousers again when you want to feel smart.0 -
Not wishing to be totally morbid, but would you wear this suit for your own funeral? (MSE and all that......)Make £2025 in 2025
