home network

I'm setting up a small wired network and it's all a bit confusing. I have a router/broadband modem with my main pc which is connected directly to the router, easy so far. I have run a cable down to my living room where my xbox and my 360 are and I'm planning to put in a pc as well so I need to connect the cable I have run down stairs to all 3, so how do I do it without unplugging the cable and pugging it in again each time I want to connect each thing to the network? DO I need a switch, a hub, another router or something else:confused:
Nothing to see here, move along.

  • yep - sounds like you need a hub/switch downstairs, and then connect each device into it, and have one connection from upstairs to downstairs.....

the latter will be your uplink (to the router) so you'll probably need that to be a cross-over cable.

    Crap it's a straight cable

You only need crossover cable when connecting two PC's together with no router in between.

If you have a 4 port router you just run a cable from each device to the router, just as you have your PC connected.

               Port 1 -------------- PC
               Port 2 -------------- Device 1
    ROUTER
               Port 3 -------------- Device 2
               Port 4 -------------- Device 3

Not necessarily a problem as most routers have auto sense ports.
