The figure in MWh for Electricity seems to correspond to the invoiced meter readings. However the MWh figure for Gas seems to differ by approximately 10% from the invoiced reading.

I hope your consumption is not Mwh in which I don't want your bill - I think you mean kwh.

Have you actually compared the IHD figures with those on the meter ?

I have Secure Liberty smart meters and was wondering if I could use the IHD for meter readings if I changed supplier.

Looking at the Cuml: figure in Monthly History.

I think if you divided the gas cuml Kwh reading on the IHD by 11.2 that should convert it to the cubic meter metric unit reading on the meter itself. The electric kwh should be the same as the meter. Watch out for the confusing Kvarh reading that Secure meters show on their electric smart meter. That is never needed on domestic electricity billing.
The gas should be close enough to use as a reading. Test it out and see if the figure is about right.
Suppliers will often use their own estimated readings for a switch and ignore a customer reading.

I always used to wonder why own gas bill calculations often didn’t tally exactly with the energy companies bill.

It was a while before I realised that the formula for converting gas ‘cubic metres’ to KWh varies slightly throughout the year due to the fluctuating calorific value of the gas itself.

Even in the heaviest months of the winter it only threw my calculations out of kilter by 35p or so per month, but nonetheless it was very puzzling as to why I couldn’t predict the exact cost of my gas given that I was using precise figures,...or so I thought.

It actually varies throughout the day, every day is different and readings are taken several times a day. It is fairly straightforward to calculate a correct bill by downloading the figure from NG and working out the average over the billing period.

The reason I am quoting Mwh is because that is what the IHD shows in the Monthly History screen as the cumulative figure which appears to be the only way you can get anywhere near to a meter reading on the IHD.

The Mwh converts to the exact kwh and the actual meter reading for Electricity.

For Gas it still shows a cumulative Mwh figure on the IHD. When you read the meter as well as the coverted Mwh figure it also shows the actual figure shown as the meter reading which is approx 10% less than the Mwh figure on the IHD.

Someone said in another thread that they could get the actual meter readings from the IHD but it appears this is not correct for Gas using the Secure IHD.

I've only got leccy and the SSE In Home Device still remotely reads the real time consumption data from the Elster meter. It also reads the current meter kwh display together with the current daily, weekly and monthly consumption totals.

In fact I can recall daily history for seven days, weekly history for five weeks and monthly history totals back to last December (I've checked them against my own meter reads and they are within a couple of kwh - presumably because they measure from midnight and I do it around 0800)

It looks like it would go back further as it will scroll back to last August (so 12 months) but it looks like it was reset when I moved away from SEE in November last year.

What I can't get is tariff data or real time costs which weren't of much interest to me anyway

The wireless range isn't all that good though only about 5- 7 metres before it loses it's connection
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

On my spreadsheet these days I just use a calorific value of 39.4 every month, all year round. I don’t bother changing it because it’s not really worth the effort;...I can live with a monthly inaccuracy of 15p or so.

However, it sometimes works out that my actual monthly gas bill is a whole 30p less than I’d estimated;...and that’s when the party begins.
