Because sometimes 'legit' keys are sold with their own media (that magically make them work). If all you got is a key, that's fine (but I wouldn't trust the license anyway).
You don't know much about this do you? I upgraded my install of Windows 10 Home to Pro and it went like this:
1) Go to Settings, Windows Activation, click on upgrade link.
2) Enter Windows 10 Pro license key.
3) Windows Update scurries off and downloads some files from the Windows Update Server.
4) Prompt to do a reboot.
The end.
Oh and as a former MCSE I have worked in a corporate environment and my last job was as a systems technician at a software development company and like the others here I think you're talking complete tosh. You would have no idea that the key wasn't genuine nor if the computer was asking for activation as a domain administrator unless you were sat at the keyboard of said machine. Even if it was asking for activation and had the not activated watermark on the screen it would still continue to get updates from Microsoft. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. You obviously don't work in a corporate environment, by the sound of it you've also never worked with Microsoft domains..
I have 3 MCSE's - Worked in enterprise IT for 20 years and you are talking crap.
The license key has no bearing whatsoever on the software installed
Obviously if your company owns the machine then it should be licensed correctly should the m$ police come to audit - but other than that there is no issue atall
All of this however - has no bearing on the OP so whilst you are attempting to sound clever, you are actually confusing things0 -

I said that if the laptop had to work in *my* domain, I wouldn't want a license that might not be legit. That's all.
And I also said that if all you are buying is a key, no media, then there is no software-related risk, the only potential issue could be the license itself.0 -
What crap? I said that for a personal use I wouldn't see many problems, but since they insisted on having a Pro license, I guess that they are expecting some kind of control over this computer.

That c$%p...making it up as you go along and of no use whatsoever. You mentioned nothing about personal use until much later and considering that the PC is for personal use....why are you still posting?!
They already received the advice they needed. Your input is just a continued pointless interjection. Why don't you just stop?0
