Quick question about a red light (pic included)

Hi everyone, just after a quick right or wrong answer here.

So I am adding a picture with the manouvre I made, the car in front was static and not moving. Light on the right was green, light on the left was red. Didn't go through the bus lane at all, just moved round the car sat at the traffic lights, I think he had stopped as the light on the left was red but we were already through and there seems to be no stoppage lines apart from on the bus lane...

That red light on the left looks like it operates the bus lane but I am not quite sure of this set up, can anyone advise? Should I expect a ticket?

Thank you to anyone who can help :)

  • Wrong forum. You want this moved to the parent "Motoring" forum, I guess.

The lights and road markings for those lights are truly confusing. Maybe post to Pepipoo's "Flame Pit" forum also for comment.

    Ah apologies, It is confusing.

As I have read about cameras and tickets / points for going through a red light I am just chasing any advice on if I was right or wrong here :)

You need to wait and see what happens, it looks there is one small CCTV camera on the traffic light in the middle, though is probably not looking for traffic violations anyway.

The CCTV cameras that do you for traffic offences tend to be larger more robust things.

There seems to be some kind of camera/monitoring device attached to most of the traffic lights at that junction, if you zoom in.

I would have done exactly as you did. Unlikely to get a ticket if you didn't encroach into the bus lane. :)

Stupid drivers like the one shown in the stationary car, cause accidents by stopping at 'secondary/repeater' red lights when already through a junction, thereby blocking the entire junction! And in your example description, it seems the other car stopped at a green light!

That set of lights is odd, I would have read it that the green light on the right was for the right turn only lane and the red on the left for the straight on. But I would also have thought that the red lights should have been on both sides with the green (if I'm right) having an arrow. I've been driving 35 years and still get confused occasionally.

I initially thought that but if you look at the green light there is a light below it which is probably for the right turn

There seems to be a light controlled junction AND a Pelican crossing that each seem to share only some of eac others lights

There is no stop line for the middle lane, but that does look like a pedestrian crossing that you've undertaken to go through.

I'd like to see how the lights cycle. I'm guessing both lights must go to red before the pedestrians get a green man?

    Terrible design!

The stop line for that lane is at the first traffic light. You were past it so can continue. The independent light on the left is very confusing and wrong as there is only one lane at this point. Presumably for the bus lane but the bus lane has ended prior to this.

I think you should appeal this if you get a ticket, using the confusing nature of the lights as the reason for the appeal. You might lose if you go to court, but I think it more likely that you would win, providing you concede that staying behind the other motorist would have been the better option.
