Motor insurance post Brexit

Just taken out a years motor insurance with Aviva

On the reverse of the certificate there is a multi language section to "prove insurance cover in EU"
Which leads me to my point - If Brexit doesn't go as smoothly as some people believe that it will - I see problems ahead to ensure that European cover continues......
With the concerns that someone involved in an accident in deepest darkest Romania or Greece may find themselves in serious problems if they rely on their insurance cover !

Why does it concern you are you thinking of going there?
  • Believe it or not people drove to Europe before the EU

I am aware of that - but insurance pre "Common Market" was taken out on the basis that it was normally used in the UK and extended on a trip by trip basis via green cards - at least that is what we used to do
I am not planning on leaving UK - But am just wondering whether it will change !
  • We could just do the same as all those Romanian and Bulgarian drivers do over here ;)

But the Romanian and Bulgarians who get caught with no insurance, driving in the UK simply get a smacked wrist - I very much doubt whether a Brit getting caught in Romania or Bulgaria with no valid insurance will get off so lightly there !!

    Exactly.

Got broken into a couple of months back and my neighbour chased them down the drive and they drove off in a Romanian plated car.

The police came round and the reg number was handed to them.

Apparently they have no way of tracking or reading foreign plates.

    Handy :money:

That's incorrect, they can put a report against a foreign plate and let anpr do it's stuff.

B*ll*cks. They just couldn't be bothered. I'm not sure they'd do much chasing up for a UK reg either and around here they didn't even send a scene of crimes oficer to £15k's worth of plant equipment robbed

I've known UK drivers get fines for Italian city no-drive areas.

What the point in sending scenes of crime to a plant theft?

Why on earth should there be a problem? If an insurer says they will cover you in another country then they will cover you in another country.

A contractual arrangement has stuff all to do with Brexit. This seems to be some invented anxiety.
