Previous employer screwed up my DBS...

I had an enhanced DBS done recently as part of my previous employment. I submitted my documents and my employer did the rest.

A few weeks later I went on booked holiday. A few weeks after returning, my employer made me redundant and I started looking for new jobs. A lot of stress caused by losing my home, relying on friends for accommodation and eventually having to relocate myself from England to Scotland for work. New Scottish employer says I need a DBS which I either have to pay for myself, or they will accept a DBS done within the last six months which my last one will qualify, except there is a problem - I never received anything in the post from DBS.

After calling the DBS folks to find out why, they said it looks like my previous employer mis-keyed my postcode as (not my real postcode) AB1 3XY when my postcode is actually AB12 3XY. This resulted in the postal service being unable to deliver and the document was returned to the folks at DBS.

Now, as far as they are concerned, it's not their mistake, so they won't be correcting it. They said that they won't send out a new one as it's been more than three months since it went through so my only other option is to apply for another DBS and pay.

I'm not sure how to proceed, surely it's DBS' fault for sending it out to an address other than the one given on my ID documents?

You want them to cross reference every application address to the ID address...

    it's £26, or 44 for enhanced.

BUT in addition surely a Scottish employer would use Disclosure Scotland?
  • Who paid for the first DBS, you or your ex-employer?

Yeah, I'd expect them to check the address they are sending it to matches, especially as if it's one postcode digit different.

I'd also expect them to contact me or my employer once it was returned to them, or you know, rub two brain cells together when it came back as unknown address to figure out what the issue was.

They were happy to accept my previous non-Scotland one.

My ex-employer paid. But since they are my ex-employer, they won't be redoing any DBS check.

I wouldn't expect them to re-do it but seeing as they paid, you haven't lost out here.

Just pay for the new one and keep a record of the application form number so that you can track it online.

If I now have to pay £44 that I otherwise wouldn't have had to had things worked correctly, I'm afraid I have to disagree with 'you haven't lost out'.

    You haven't lost out.

You got made redundant and had to look for new employment, you have no DBS from the previous job so you can continue as nothing happened.

You have a new job subject to DBS, which you have to pay for so you would have had to have done regardless of the previous job or not.

IF you had paid for the previous DBS, then you will have lost out, but you didn't, so you are in the same position now whether you had the last job or not.

If you got made redundant from the previous job that did not require a DBS, you would be in exactly the same situation now
  • If you receive benefits than speak to your work coach they will more than likely be happy to help.

I have also often found that most employers would be happy to pay if you approach them and let them know you can’t afford to pay yourself and agree for it to be taken from your first months salary/wages.
