Swapping down rewards credit cards - credit rating effect?

Hello
Just wondering if anyone knows if there are any negative consequences for changing from an Amex Gold Card down to Amex Blue Reward card? Want to try and avoid the Amex Gold Annual fee but would rather not change down if it will affect my credit rating as thiknig of applying for a mortgage soon.

Grateful for any advice.

Your credit file will show the closure of one card and the opening of another. It's unlikely to result in another search, though it's possible.

You don't have a credit rating - lenders will take their own view on the data.

In itself, it's nothing that should cause concern.

If it can wait until after the mortgage application, then I'd leave it until then. If it is coming up for renewal imminently, then as an existing customer they may be able to offer you a lower tier card without a credit search - might want to phone them and ask.
  • Thanks all very helpful indeed
