Hi everyone
Just looking for some advice.
I am in the process of having a new lawn laid. The "landscape" gardiner came today.
He used a machine (can't remember what it's called) to churn up the old lawn then left at around 3 pm saying that the turf was being delivered tomorrow for laying. However there is still lots of weeds and roots left in the grass! I believe that the earth should be totally clear and on top of that it should treated with weedkiller and then be left for a week or so to ensure no weeds come through.
Also he said he was laying an inch of top soil before turfing. My understanding is that it should be a mimimum of 4 inches, preferably 6 inches.
It is not a cheap job!
Has anyone had this done or any gardeners out there who can advise?
Many thanks.

How much topsoil you need depends on how much is already present; probably plenty if you already had a lawn.
Was the old lawn just churned up and mixed into the soil? Has it been levelled properly?
Old turf left in the ground is going to bread down and result in dips, as will not levelling out the ground sufficiently. While the weeds can and will pop up, it's less of a problem with turf than it is with seed.0 -
It would also depend on exactly what you asked him to do, and what his estimate/quote that you presumably agreed with him says he is going to do.0
