I cannot go into the legal benefits or otherwise but to answer your original question molly:
I would recommend the Tascam DR05 such as sold at the following link https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tascam-DR-05-quality-handeld-recorder/dp/B00LU8K790/ref=dp_ob_title_ce
It is very versatile, runs a long time on batteries, can be set to record over a long period automatically and puts markers on the recorded file (if really needed). Files can be data and time stamped from it's internal clock.
It can be used with external microphones (as advised above probably the best solution) and the auto recordings can be set to start depending upon the level of noise .
If you decide to go ahead and need help to set it up for best recordings p.m. me.
Thank you "Heedtheadvice" Sounds exactly what I need. I've just taken a quick look and price is what I would expect for this sort of device. The fact you can set it to record over a long period automatically is the set up I was looking for. Mobile phone camera/sound recording apps are ok but cut out if you are not watching the screen.
