Not speeding but camera flashed me once

So I was driving down the A3 (Roehampton area) last night. Speed limit 40mph. I drive down this stretch of road daily. I slowed down as I approached the speed camera. My speedometer read 38 as I went through the camera (so I was probably only actually going 36). Despite this I was flashed by the camera. There was only one flash which I saw in the rear view mirror. Could the camera just be faulty? And why would it only flash once? I know I shouldn’t panic as I was not speeding but still....

    What contradiction?

I drive past 4 cameras on my way to work each day (all of them in a 30 limit) and the amount of people doing well below this speed but still slow down when approaching the cameras baffles me.

Maybe they don't trust their speedometer accuracy or maybe it's just an instinctive habit but whatever the reason, it still happens.

I pretty much always slow down when going past a known speed camera just to be sure - it doesn't mean I was speeding in the first place.

I slowed down from 40 to 38 to be sure. I was not speeding at any point

Could the reason be bad driving?

Speed cameras flash for all sorts of reasons, it doesn't mean you'll get that little envelope any time soon.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

By the time you slowed down the camera will have seen you - by your own admission you slowed to 38 so were in excess of the speed limit.

I hope you realise just how annoying this is for drivers behind you.

Not if it was a rear-facing camera, which this almost certainly was.
