Want to switch

I am with Scottish Power and I’m around £200 in debit on my account. My current tariff ends tomorrow and I’ve been looking to switch to a new supplier. Can I do this if I’m in debit and would I need to pay the debit before I switch? Also, anyone got a good deal recently? Bulb is coming out cheapest but just unsure about it all. Any help appreciated.

My understanding is that some companies will allow switches with debt up to a limit, but varies on the supplier. I myself have been in debt for over 10 years, with an amount of £400+, so have not switched for quite a while!0

It is quite possible that SP will block any transfer. Can you not get your account into credit ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0

If you are determined to switch then you will need to pay the £200 either when SP issue the final bill (if they allow the switch) or by crediting your account now.
To guarantee the switch going through I would say the second option is best.
If you have not got the £200 available that may rule out any switch at the moment.0 -
Generally, no. Suppliers will put an objection on until the debt is cleared.0

As long as it is only a debit, and not a debt (i.e. an amount that has been demanded you pay at least 28 days ago), then there should be no objection.
Be prepared to pay the final bill when it arrives
(not before)
Double check your comparisons. I'd be really surprised if Bulb are the cheapest, and don't forget they will be increasing prices in November again.0 -

Ironically if you had switched suppliers in that time you probably would have saved yourself far more than the £400 your in debt!.0 -
