hi folks,my computer is running very noisey and i think its the psu.it squeels on start up then settles down to a steady "brrring"noise(technical term there lol).the unit is an atx 300.i,ve taken the side off my computer and cleaned it out but noise is still there.question is how difficult is it to fit a new one?also do i have to fit same type of unit back in as ther seem to be 400,600 watt units quit cheap on e-bay.all advice gratfully recieved.:D

dont worry about the wattage - 400 will be fine. Just make sure it is atx which most are anyway. If it is noisy replace it. (get new)

No you can fit a higher powered one, the higher power rating the better.
Never fit a lower rated one.
They are easy to change. They have a lot of wires that confuse people but they all have plugs on the end that match up with the one you already have.
Just take your time and maybe draw a sketch to help you.
If the wires look a bit untidy after changing the PSU use some small cable ties and always divert cables away from fans in the motherboard.
PS: A higher powered PSU will not use anymore electricity as your current one as the PSU only supplies what you components draw.0 -
^^ I agree, depending on your system 500+ looks like the direction computers are going anyway, so if your going to change graphics or cpu or the whole insides of your computer in the future, at least your new psu will be ready, check out the model number for sale on ebay and do a search, some of these cheap Chinese ones are really noisy and it's worth an extra tenner for future hours of quiet running. There are 10 types of people in the world; those who understand binary and those who don't...0

I'd agree with sleep2much - these days you mainly seem to have a choice between really cheap PSUs with fantasy power ratings and fans that squeal like a herd of stuck pigs, or considerably more expensive, quiet ones.
@wayne - If you'd willing to spend a bit more money for something quiet, have a look at http://www.quietpc.com/. Their stuff isn't that cheap (so it probably goes against the spirit of this site
to a certain extent) but I found it made working on the computer a lot nicer.
Mind you, as a programmer and proto-geek I do spend an awful lot of time in front of a computer so maybe my needs are a bit different from yours.0 -
I had a noisy PSU which responded to a Thump  so I carried on for months - then one day the fan failed to start. BANG
So you MUST replace a noisy PSU0 -
thank you all for your advice.cheers for the site mrtg0525.dont mind paying bit more if the unit is good quality.:beer:0

My previous PC was badly damaged because I didnt replaced the power suply unit and it was noisy for like 5 months, then one day the computer turned off and I was unable to turn it on, I had to replace the source and other key components

Btw, do you use a system like MSI core center to keep you updated on your PC temp and the power suply fan RPM?0
