Car Insurance Advice - 2 cars 2 drivers

Apologies if this has been asked before, I did try a few searches and couldn't find anything.

Basically, i'm assuming this is quite a common scenario. My household has 2 drivers (me and my wife) and we currently have one car which we're both named drivers. We are going to have to get a second car though, and were wondering what the most cost efficient way to do this would be. Do you get multiple drivers on multicar policies, or are we better to get two seperate policies and have us both as named drivers on each policy?

Thanks,
Allan

You say that you have one car already but it is probably a policy in someones name with the other person as a 'named driver'

If each of you will own a car in your own names then, from my own experience, I would suggest two separate insurance policies, one in yours with MrsCA86 as a named driver and one in the name of Mrs CA86 with you as a named driver.

We have a similar situation and two policies is certainly the most cost-effective solution for us. I tried quotes from multicar policies and although I may not have fully understood, it didnt seem of any great benefit to me at all (either financially or admin) and the no claims was confusing but I fully admit that could have been my misunderstanding. As the renewal dates were at different times of the year, I couldn't properly work out if MultiCar was truly a good deal based on the fact the quotation was only for part of the year for one of the cars.

Essentially, I personally just like to keep it all separate and feel more in control with separate fully visible no claims discount, and hit the comparison sites at renewal time.

The person who drives the vehicle the most must the the main driver on the policy. I've got quotes for multi-car policies in the past and found it to be more expensive than getting them individually. To me the only thing multi-car policies offer is convenience.

Multi car isnt always cheapest, but allows you the option of paying one premium.

In my previous relationship it was one car each in our names with the other as named driver.
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.
  • Even if you decide multi-car isn't for you, it might be worth getting both cars insured with the same insurer - they often offer a discount for a second car.

If current car is in your name speak to your insurer to see if they will mirror the ncb onto a second policy for your wife or if they will give her an introductory ncb entitlement. Lots of insurers do this.

We have separate policies but are now with the same insurer (LV) who give a modest discount for the 2nd policy. This seemed the best and most cost effective way.

Doesn't need to be with the same insurer, mine has never been and every insurer I've gone with on my second car has mirrored the discount, even those found on comparison sites.
