in Credit cards
I got a txt msg from Tesco Visa saying my card had been cancelled as a precaution do to industry wide measures. I have asked for details as to how, when and where this happened so that I can take appropriate action. However I have been told that cannot provide this. This does not seem right if the security of my data has been beached surely I have a right to know.

Did you call them or reply via txt because personally I would only ever call them with a situation you describe, it could be a scam0

Tesco Bank may not have any other details. 'Industry wide measures' suggests the incident is being managed by Visa. Tesco Bank may only have been given a list of potentially comprised cards.
I think it's policy of Mastercard and Visa not to name and shame companies who suffer loss of credit and debit card details; to do so may discourage others from coming forward to report such issues.
If Tesco Bank had told you the data loss happened at, let's say, Sainsbury's, you or someone like you would be shouting from the rooftops about it. There would be endless 'I'm never shopping at Sainsbury's again' messages here.
Next time a company loses data they might look at my hypothetical Sainsbury's incident and keep it under their hat.
Credit and debt card details don't belong to you anyway; they belong to the issuer.
Realistically, if you were given specifics about a data loss what would you do? And what do you do about the hundred and one other data losses you aren't aware of?0 -

What action would you like to take ?0 -
Personally, I'd just be happy that they were proactive about it and issued you with a new card. Although it is inconvenient, it is much more convenient than having to fight to get fraudulent transactions removed/refunded after your compromised card was used without your knowledge/consent.
I'm not 100% sure about this, but you might be able to request more information under GDPR. If they can't tell you the exact reason why your card was cancelled, you at least will know all the information Tesco Bank hold about you that could have potentially been lost if your personal data was compromised0 -
It generally means that a database somewhere was leaked and BIN or your CC number was found so the decision has been made to change it to prevent fraud.
A lot will be based on how much the retailer has disclosed although the last one that comes to mind with a leak was Carphone Warehouse.0 -
Are you sure it has been cancelled ?
Have you tried using the card since receiving the text ?0 -
@walkecm
@onlyfoolsandparking asked whether you had responded by text or called Tesco? Can you confirm which? One would have imagined that Tesco would have told you that a new card was on its way. One would also imagine that they might have quoted the last 4 digits of your card in the text. Did the name of the text sender really appear as 'Tesco Visa'? I don't know but that sounds highly improbable because they aren't 'Tesco Visa', they are just 'Tesco'.
And finally, there could indeed have been a data breach and this may be the recipient of all that data phishing to get more information out of you. Tread with care.0
