Thanks all for your replies. So generally, the usual protocol here is for me to get it repaired and then ask him for the money? I'm just concerned as I can't see how he couldn't just refuse to pay once the repair has taken place.

He can refuse, then you could sue him or go down the insurance route which won't be a problem having declared the accident and the fact you intend to settle privately.

There's no obligation to get the repair done at all.

He has caused you a loss in value, and that is what you are claiming.

If he'd written off the car do you think his insurance would say - we'll pay out once you've bought a replacement?....

    Or:
Pay £150, ask owner to sign a letter acknowledging receipt of money and stating exactly what it was for and agreeing not to pursue an insurance claim.
If owner opens an insurance claim, contact insurance company and advise them of what has happened and that the owner is attempting to claim when they have suffered no financial loss.
Owner could have claim denied and possible cancellation of policy.

Who then denies that's his signature...

So you ask for a photo etc. and so on. Drags on and on.
