Hi, no I don't think they offer text alerts.
Do you have a laptop, or PDA? The number of free wi-fi areas abroad is amazing and growing daily. In the less developed countries it seems to be catching on even quicker - like mobile phones - because they tend not to have full coverage from landlines.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
LazyDaisy, thanks for the reply. It might be easier if I clarify and state that I am serving in HM Forces and so the places we go, there is very very limited access to internet. However, we can almost always get mobile phone signal (at a price
). That was the reason for seeming to stick rigidly to the SMS element, as I know that is the only reasonably guaranteed comms we get. 0 -
Very new to this, and hope this question hasn't been answered already elsewhere (I did look).
I have an amount of money to invest into three shares via a S&S ISA. I am prepared to accept that it is a punt and realise that it good go down as well as up etc etc
I went to see a local IFA and asked how I could keep an eye on the shares. He told me the usual list of websites and newspapers. I asked if he could monitor them on my behalf, even if this was for a fee. I should explain, that due to my job I am away from home out of the UK for long periods. I was a bit surprised to hear that he couldn't offer that service and more so that he said that unless you had a large amount to invest with a stockbroker (he said 6 figures(ish)) it was unlikely you would get any kind of personal monitoring service or phone call, certainly not in real time.
I have seen lots of software programs that will sit on my PC or websites that will email me alerts but these are only any good if I am either sat at my PC (which I rarely am) or have access to my email, which is sporadic at best.
Is there a solution??? I am new to this and just want to protect my investments and keep in touch with what is going on when I am unable to get on to the internet.
Thanks in advance,
Chris
If you visited any IFA they should have pointed you in the direction of an investment professional or stockbroker, they would be able to provide you with the advice you require - given your circumstances you may wish to explore the services of an advisory or discretionary broker.Anything posted is not given as advice but to help with a discussion.0 -
I use Moneyextra - portfolio really easy to use and with prices every 15 minutes.0

If you put
share price sms
into Google, there are a number of interesting hits. It seems that sms alerts are quite common. Some companies even offer this facility direct e.g O2 - you can register to receive sms alerts about their share price.
However, they offer this via Hemscott .... and from what I can see you simply need to register for the Hemscott service. There doesn't seem to be a subscription, but you are likely to be charged "per text".
Have a look here
Of course, it may be that you have to buy your shares via Hemscott to get this service, but it might be worth considering, especially if you're choosing your own shares anyway.
But it does seem to be more common than I'd thought, so Google might find you something suitable.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac

Dear all,
Many thanks for all of your advice. I have signed up to one of the services mentioned in this post and its working great. Too well in fact, already hit my alert level for Standard Life, after their drop today. Never mind.
Thanks again
