Two meters for Electricity
My 91-year-old aunt is with Scottish Power for her electricity and her bill has doubled in recent months to over £200 pm. She is worried because it's going to go up again in October. She wants to switch providers but has a problem - for some reason she has two meters (they were there when she moved into her home a few years ago) and meter readings are needed for both of them. She tried to switch providers before but when the man from the new company came to read her meter he told her she couldn't stay with them because of the two meters. Any suggestions as to what she should do? Thanks in advance.

Hi,
does she have storage heaters, so one meter for normal usage and one for the heating.
Is she on E7, have a look at her bills for which tariff she is on.0 -
is one black and one white ?
Maybe she has economy 7, with cheaper elec at night?
If that is the case, there are E7 tariffs out there, just need to tick the box0 -
She has underfloor heating only. I will check her bill, many thanks.0

Will look into E7 rates, thanks!0

It really depends on the tarrifs wheather she can move suppliers.
If you post the meter serial(s) I could check (It will reveal the address). Otherwise my best guess is only the big companies are likely to support them (The small companies do not support legacy tarrifs).0 -
Right, thanks, I'm going to see her tomorrow, I'll try to remember to look for the serial numbers.0

Only the legacy supplier will support the legacy metering your aunt appears to have.
Don't be suprised if they only have one tariff either.0 -

You can look at all the rates you like, but the only one the current metering can be used on will be the tariff the legacy supplier offers (and that tariff is not generally publicised, but as yoiur aunt is on it, she will be informed of the details)
Or the legacy supplier would probably agree to charge her full rate electricity on all registries/meters rather than the low rate your aunt presumably benefits from for certain usage/time of use.
Into week 5 now. 1 week to go...0 -

You're getting some puzzling answers here.
My parents have exactly the same setup. I have a thread of my own called "Switching Help" a few lines down from this one, and no-one has told me thus far there may be a problem with suppliers and Economy 7.
As far as I can tell from all the switching comparison sites, including Cheap Energy Club, most suppliers will offer a daytime and a night-time rate, which looks to be exactly your setup. There's the option to say 'yes' to Economy 7 on all the comparison sites during the process, so I would assume any quotes that come out at the end can accommodate it. Otherwise the sites are not really fit for purpose.0 -
What does "legacy supplier" mean? Is it the company who originally installed the meters?0
