Unlimited European Car Insurance for an under 25

Hey,

I'm due to start studying in the Republic of Ireland next month, and plan on taking my car across. I have found many insurance companies that offer a max of 90 days, or 180 days within one policy year. However, I would need more than this. The only option I've found is Saga or Stuart Collins, both of which would not work for me as I'm under 25 (Saga insures 50+ and Stuart Collins 25+).

Does anyone have any suggestions for insurance companies that would offer unlimited european cover? Preferably fully comp but if necessary would settle for third party.

Thanks in advance

I don't know about ROI, but you can only drive a non UK registered car in the UK for a total of 6 months (182 days) in any 12 month period, so I'd imagine it would be the same with an UK car in ROI, as this would have come from some European Directive.

So the 180 days a year is only 2 less than the maximum anyway.

I don't know if you'd count as resident therebut as an ROI resident, you can only drive a UK registered car for 1 day, before you have to register it in ROI, and pay a stupendous amount of tax.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

    Have a look at https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/vehicles/registration/registration-abroad/ireland/indexamp_en.htm

As a student you have exemptions but there are conditions.

Unfortunately I can't help on the insurance question. I would think best bet is to take the 90 days from your UK company and then get insurance across there.

I had to do similar when moving to NI for work back in the 80s

Not really the same: NI is part of the UK.

But I suspect that may have been due to the "troubles": if you'd told your GB insurers you were changing your address to that particular part of the UK in the 80s, they would have had kittens.

You have legal minimum third-party cover for the entire year anyway - by law (United Nations Vienna Conventions on Road Traffic). What your insurer is talking about is extending that to the same level of cover as you would have in the UK.

But the others are right about whether you can drive a foreign-registered car around for that long or not... The key is whether you're classed as a resident or not. As a student, and if you come back during the holidays, probably not. But the total within the year will still apply.
  • So just to be 100% certain, without upgrading my insurance at all, I will still be covered for the legal minimum in European Union countries?

If I become a resident because of the number of days that I'm in Ireland, does that mean that I have to take out additional insurance, more than what I already have?

The last bullet point on the previously linked europa website (sorry I can't post the link as I'm a new member) - would seem to suggest that I am ok, both registering wise and insurance wise.

Thank you everyone so far :)

Vienna Convention insurance is not down to EU-or-not. They're UN, and cover a range of countries beyond the EU. The UK will remain a signatory in the future...

If you're deemed resident in Ireland, you need to register the car in Ireland.

At that time mainland insurers would only give 90 days 'green card' cover if you went to NI because there was nothing stopping you driving to the south to a 'foreign' country so it was easier that they would only provide the same cover as if you went to France for example

It was nothing to do with the troubles as not even NI insurance would cover you for that. Any claims for terrorist induced damage were paid by the government

Yes right up until 11am on the 29th March 2019 when we will no longer be in the EU.

You would be better asking your insurance company.

Insuring and taxing the car are entirely separate.

You can only use a non uk registered car in the UK for up 6 months in any period of 12 months.

You need to check the regulations in Southern Ireland for how long a Uk registered car can be used there.

The legal minimum cover (3rd party only) covers neither you or the vehicle: is that really what you want?
