Christmas visit to London

Options
My sister and I want to take our two grandchildren to London in December. I have been many times so know my way around. We will do a few touristy things but my main question is where to stay. I think we should stay out of the city in a Travelodge or Premier Inn but close to a tube line. Any recommendations for which area I should look at for ease into the city, thanks?

Have stayed at the Travelodge at Walthamstow which is literally next door to a tube station. right near some shops as well (including a Tesco Express). Views from higher floors have a view over London as well.
  • Thank you. Just checked it out. That seems perfect. Only 20 mins on tube to Victoria. Book now and prices are great. Thanks again.

There's a Travelodge just off the A3 at London Chessington Tolworth, next to a train station. about half an hour from central London.
Once in London go upstairs on buses and take them to Hamley's.
    The underground's rubbish for kids.

You obviously see more from a bus, but sometimes you just want to travel quickly so use the tube and spend more time in places you want to visit.

Going on the tube is a real experience for children if they've not travelled on it before.

Good point, but upstairs on a bus they'll see the christmas lights, the crowds, the shopping, the storefronts. On the underground, not so much.

Trust me when I was a kid, my relatives took me round the central London shops at Christmas, and the memories are still with me. We must also have travelled on the underground but that didn't stick in the memory.

Plus, you can go a long way on the underground without getting very far, IYSWIM.
