Car boot lock showing unlocked but it's locked

Hi,

I have a Renault Megane 2008 model. I am having trouble with it's boot locking sign on the dashboard.

It shows that the boot lock is open and sounds the alarm but when I check, the boot is actually locked.

Then I open the boot, move the lock with my finger and then lock it again. The dashboard sign then goes away.

This problems comes at two occasions:
1. When I open the driver side door and see the sign on the dashboard. I then turn the engine on (start the car) and most of the time, the sign disappears. Else, I do the above (open the boot and close it).

2. When I am driving and I go over any speed breaker or over any potholes, the sign appears again and start giving that annoying sound. The only way to stop it is to stop the car and do the above solution.

I am no expert in cars so any technical things will go over my head but if someone could please explain in English about what could be the problem, it will really help me getting the correct issues sorted. I have spoken with few people and they have different opinions, one said the lock machanism needs changing and another one saying sensor not working, etc.

I want someone to fix the correct issue and it's causes than playing with the car and charging me, you know what.

Thank you in advance for reading and helping.

I had this issue with my wife's car a couple of weeks ago. The alarm kept going off when parked locked and the dash display kept bonging with a "Gate ajar" warning when driving. The switch in the latch mechanism was waterlogged. I disconnected it and sprayed it with water repellent contact spray. That stopped the error messages and alarm going off. I reconnected it last week after it had dried out and haven't had any problems since.
  • Thank you both. So it is the switch.

Could you please tell me how I can fix it? Any video or images showing what I can do and how will help.

It will help me learn and also save some quids.

    Many thanks again.

Just as a thought, my son had the same issue with his Fiat Punto but replacing the lock and switch made no difference.

It turns out there was a break in the wiring where it passes from the body into the tailgate. Seems to be a common problem, certainly with Fiats, where the rubbish quality wiring eventually breaks with the opening amd closing of the tailgate.
  • Thank you all and apologies I couldn't come back earlier due to health reasons. I have checked with few technicians and they doubt about the chip in the catch. I am going to get someone work on it and see how it goes. Thank you so much for your guidance on this.
  • Hopefully it's a simple fix, let us know.
