I've never been much of a baker but in my imagination I must have thought I was as I've got all manner of cake baking tins - all in pristine condition (actually probably unused condition). I've also obviously had intention to bake as I've got a range of cake mixes in the larder. So I'm going to use those up before moving into the much more OS world of measuring my own ingredients! Today I'm proud to say I made a Dorset apple cake from a mix generously boxed up by Mr Hollywood himself. Very nice too. (Referring to the cake rather than Mr Hollywood)0

I made a pear crumble today, which went down well. Am looking forward to making orange and apricot rock buns with my 3 yo assistant at the weekendValue-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

I have had a good day today:D, 1 8ins, 1 2lb loaf tin and 1 1lb loaf tin of Clementine and Almond cake, the round one for a coffee morning. Then 2 2lb Jamaica Ginger cake, half quantity of Thriftwizard's savoury flapjack and a half quantity of Banana flapjack.
We don't eat a large amount of cake, but 2 for the coffee morning and 2 to take away on holiday in the caravan next week along with the flapjacks, small cake to be frozen for our return. The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time. (Abraham Lincoln)0 -
I feel envious to you guys that still have time to bake. Cause as of now I'm really too busy to my work and house chores that I don't have enough time to bake.0

The housework will still be there if left for a day, so pick and choose what really needs to be done now. Cleanliness I would suggest is a priority, there will be plenty of wintry weekend to come over the next few months that you can devote yourself to clearing out junk etc.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

I totally agree with VFM on this. I work 50+ hours most weeks and it’s not just Mon-Friday plus I have a DD aged 10 to look after. I bake when I can and try to find recipes that don’t take too much time/work if I’m short of time but I really enjoy it and find it relaxing. DD loves to join in and learn to bake/cook as well so I try to make time for it on rainy days at home.
Today I made scone and butter pudding - basically a bread and butter pudding using scones left from the batch I made last week. Such a simple recipe, I think it took 5-10 minutes to prepare then 20 minutes in the oven. Same for the scones I made last week that went into it tonight.
Apparently it’s ‘awesome’ according to DH and considering it’s the second time I’ve made bread and butter pudding I’m quite pleased with that.0 -
I am an oldie and have always baked, my gran and my mother and nearly everyone I knew did. We lived in the country, so no shops nearby to buy anything like that and hardly any choice anyway post WW11.
I do buy some treats, like a Danish Pastry or something too fiddly to make, but scones, lemon drizzle, fruit cakes, sponges, crumbles and cookies or muffins don't take very long to make and I have an OH who burns a lot of calories so my offerings are always appreciated, even after all these years the occasional failure occurs, but is never wasted, thank goodness for custard:rotfl:
For me baking and gardening trump housework anytime:)The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time. (Abraham Lincoln)0 -
Needing to take something 'sweet/desserty' for a Church PotLuck this evening, trawled Google for a recipe that I had all the ingredients for. I came up with this one for Nutella Chocolate Cake.
I couldn't have any due to it not being Gluten Free- however, there was none left at all - bar a few crumbs - so it must have been OK :j. It says that it serves 6-8, but I got 12 decent size slices from it :T!

Yesterday my son made a lovely Victoria Sandwich cake from Mary Berry's recipe and today I made some pastry and baked a dozen corned beef pasties. I agree with the view that it is good to make time to bake especially if it is a pleasurable activity. Plus you always know what is in the cakes and they won't be full of preservatives.0
