SSE 2-year fixed voided by smart meter installation?

Hi, I signed up through the Cheap Energy Club with SSE for a 2-year fixed electricity and gas tarriff Oct 2016, but last autumn they switched me to a 1-year fixed tarriff and doubled my gas charges. Is this because I had a smart metre installed, or can I claim back the extra money they have been taking from me? Thanks, I welcome all helpful insights!

Can you give us the tariff details please - unit rates and standing charges and the consumption in kwh.

Thank you DJC1960 - we now await the OP's consumption.

At face value I can't see why the introduction of a Smart meter results in a change of tariff. The charges may well be as result of your consumption being greater than originally estimated. At the end of year 1 were you in debit?

  • Thanks, if it was fixed, I thought it wouldn't change for 2 years, but I wondered if the meter showed a greater usage than SSEs original estimate at the start of the fix, that meant they were entitled to raise the cost. I was disputing charges from when I first purchased my property, but those have now been resolved.

Fixed as in tarrif/unit cost fixed.
Fixed does not mean total cost fixed as that depends upon your usage .
  • Thanks, yes, just confused though as SSE established a fixed rate each month, too, but I suppose that is reviewed ona regualr basis. I received new paperwork that I was switched to a one-year plan, but I'm not sure if that was because I had one year left on my Cheap Energy Club Deal.

Then you need to ask them. Are you sure that you were on a 2 year deal and that when that finished you weren't swapped to a standard (ie expensive) tariff ?

  • Well, I'm still supposed to be in my 2-year fix through the end of September, so I'll give them a call. Thanks everyone!
