When An Advanced Purchase Discount Isn't

Hi
I need to book a room in a city hotel for one night the weekend this side of Christmas to attend an event; luckily it's the Sunday so there's stacks of availability.
I've stayed in several hotels in this city before so opted for one we've stayed in before, when I checked the website the prices were incorrect, ie £80 for B&B but £240 for advanced purchase rate (same room) despite info stating "advanced purchase rate 20% discount" so I rang the hotel direct.
I was informed that the B&B rate was indeed £80 but the advanced purchase rate was £87.50 for the same room - I queried how this could be the case as 20% discount was shown on the website and was told because the normal B&B rate can fluctuate and probably go up, the advanced rate cost will remain the same at £87.50.
Surely this can't be correct.

Seems a lot of money for a Sunday night.
I usually pay less than half that at premier inn or travelodgemake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0
