I've sold three cars in the last six months (no, not a dealer, just change of heart and clearing up of my garage!).

One was a 2007 Porsche Boxster S. Independent dealers had them up around £15-16k. I priced mine at £13.5k and sold it within a week.

I was quite happy with the price and the depreciation over 6 years I owned it (equiv to less than £20 a week).

It's quite easy with Autotrader to see what people are asking and pitch lower. If you tried to keep level, you'll slow down enquiries and still have the hassle of that shuffled negotiation on your driveway. Price to sell and have the phone busy then you don't have to come down any more from your price as you can simply say you'll sell it to the next caller if they don't want it.

Last 3 cars I sold, one was cash (£3k), the other two were bank transfers and waiting around for funds to show before letting them go with the car car.

I think stuff like Boxsters sell easier on a private sale than the mainstream stuff, mainly because they're likely to be bought as second or third cars and people are likely to have the funds / funding in place to purchase them. Also its often better to buy a Porsche direct from the owner so you can get a feel for how its been maintained, owned, etc. Enthusiasts like to buy from enthusiasts. I sold my Boxster privately too, no problem at all and like you i practically broke even.

Older, cheaper stuff again will sell by virtue of the fact its not overly difficult to raise a few £K.

Its the mainstream, plentiful stuff up the money - like the O/P has - thats difficult to sell privately. People will usually want finance, warranty, trade in facilities, etc and will be prepared to pay a bit more for the privilege.
