I’ve had good outcomes applying it over all manner of things but you won’t get the advantages of breathability if the underlying layers are not, themselves, breathable.

    Thanks again Apodemus....

I've just tried to google the Farrow & Ball water based exterior masonry paint that is currently on the exterior of the property and it says the following:

    EXTERIOR MASONRY IS:
Very flat matt finish, 2% sheen level
    Quick drying
    Eco-friendly, low VOC
Highly breathable, water and fungal resistant
Water based, low odour and safe for children and pets
Resistant to peeling, cracking, chalking, blistering and colour fade for up to 15 years*

Dont think it was the perfect option to use but hasnt seemed to cause any issues so far and its been on many years....I was surprised to see it costs £80 for a 5lt pot so not the cheap option I thought. Not sure what the SD level (hope I've got that right?) is but if it is "Highly breathable" like the company say, hopefully there shouldnt be any issues painting directly over it.

As mentioned above, if you sign up to the PPUK forum, you will get much better answers and more likely to be able to find someone with direct experience of the F&B paint.

I think it takes a couple of days for a first post on PPUK to get through the admin process, so don’t be too disappointed if it takes a while for your post to appear.

Ah! I see that you were already on there asking the question yesterday afternoon!

Yes, tried to post a new thread to ask the question but you are right, it seems to take a few days to set up and still waiting for admin to post it but for some reason I was able to ask a question on a old thread...The delay means I might end up having the same question posted on different threads, all at the same time!;) oooppssss!

thanks again, its a really helpful website...

I have been using snowcem for over thirty years. It has always been recommended for external walls by professional decorators. If applied correctly it will last for at least ten years and still look as new. Sadly, when exterior plastic paints were developed Snowcem become less popular. It was manufactured in the U.K. by Blue Circle Cement, but is now only manufactured in India and imported by Northern Paints. I have painted many properties over the years with Snowcem, from huge country houses to small extensions. You will not find a better exterior paint. It is manufactured using white Portland cement and lime. And yes, it is breathable.

Just to put the record straight on this important topic...
Snowcem (or similar) are made from CEMENT and CHALK. No lime involved.
    The breathability SD is ~0.5
A PROPER breathable paint will be ~0.05 max
