My Equifax report has just highlighted the following:

A Credit Card company, has made an inquiry against your credit report on 03/08/2018 . If you were not aware of or did not consent to this search, contact MONEYSAVINGEXPERT & CAPITAL ONE for clarification.

I was not aware of this search. At the moment I know of no reason why my Credit Report should have been searched.

Does anyone know how I can obtain clarification please?

Did you use the eligibility checker?

MSE Credit club, as well a a number of other eligibility checkers uses "soft" searches (aka quotation searches) to determine which cards you are eligible for which could explain this search on your report. It will not be seen by lenders so you don't need to worry. Sometimes if you have used these checkers in the past, they retain the right to re-search you again in the future to offer you up-to-date offers, etc - you typically would have given permission for this at the time when you agree to their T&Cs (mostly it isn't prominently advertised).
