Recommendations for subprime credit card for use overseas. Non EU.

Hello all. I wondered if anyone had any recommendations for a credit card for use overseas. -Dubai. My credit is poor so would need to be subprime level. I may or may not be accepted but am hoping to apply for one that I can either spend on whilst there and repay on arrival at home to avoid interest or have as an emergency fund whilst there as I'm traveling solo. My signature will show my current issues and I will not use the credit card once back here but I would feel more comfortable having a card with me on my visit. I'm looking for pointers on what makes something a good card abroad please. What terminology am I looking for or are any providers better than others when overseas. Thank you in advance x

  • An Aqua Reward card has no fees when using abroad (except for 3% cash advances). The exchange rate used is the MasterCard default one. It is also a cashback card, so you get back 0.5% on all purchases (upto £100 cashback max per annum). :)

Agree with the above - I have one and used it purely for outside UK purchases.

when applying, make sure you applying for the correct one, as Aqua have a few different cards.

also, make sure you pay in local currency and not UK sterling if offered the chance to

I'd check out the Aqua or Tandem cards if you want a sub-prime credit card with free overseas transactions. If you you are concerned of being rejected and would prefer a debit card option, check out Monzo, Starling or Revolut.
  • Thankyou everyone. I will have a look at the aqua one and see what they say.

  • Going by your user name are you allowed to apply for any credit?
  • Possibly not able to apply. I haven't tried for any credit in over two and a half years. There's a good chance I may be rejected but if I get a low limit one that could be my back up I'd feel much better.
Its only a short trip and I have a bit set aside and an emergency fund in the bank here , it's just more to have various options open to me just in case when in a new and far away place. I'm in a fixed rate mortgage wise and SIM only and not intending to make lots of credit applications so one application won't cause me much more damage I think at this stage. I will happily cut up in return

  • Accepted with interest of 34.95 percent and much higher for cash advance. Unsure of limit yet but realistically 250 or 500 is the most I will need. Thanks for the help everyone. Being without access to credit in this country hasn't bothered me. Carrying all my money as currency in another country somehow is doing.

If you might occasionally need cash withdrawals as well, Revolut (prepaid debit)
  • Just to update. It arrived with a credit limit of £900...... Not a lot for some I know but presumably a lot withe a DMP. Good job I intend to be sensible. Once again thankyou all for leading me in the right direction x
