How to connect LED strip to headlight?

I've bought a 50cm LED strip that has red and black wires.

I have some twin-core cable to extend the wires.

How can I connect the strip to a headlight, so the strip (which is in a footwell) comes on when the headlight does?

Connect one wire to the headlight 12v feed, and the other to earth. The polarity matters, so it will work one way but not the other. My guess would be red = 12v and black = earth, but that's a guess.

Don't forget to declare your dodgy electrical modification to your insurers.

If you have to ask such a question don’t you think it would be safer getting a qualified auto electrician to do it?

You are listed as a "Money Saving Convert". How do you square that with buying silly and unnecessary car accessories

Surely if the OP connected the LED light to the sidelight wire, it would save his battery and illuminate the car better? Standard side lights can be rather dim.

Why connect it so that it's on when the headlight is on?
Surely it would be more useful as a DRL, on when the ignition is on and the headlights are off?

Is there a need for parking lights to be bright?

We don't know where the OP is intending to fit the LED strip.
